What is GYMI?
Garifuna Youths Music Initiatives (GYMI) is an after-school music program dedicated to providing a holistic approach to music education. Its mission is to nurture and develop the musical talents of Garifuna youth, starting in Dangriga Town, Belize, with plans to expand throughout Southern Belize and, ultimately, to all indigenous youth across Garifuna nations and beyond.
GYMI is committed to equipping young musicians with:
- Music Theory & Practical Lessons – Building a strong foundation in reading, writing, and understanding music.
- Instrument Mastery – Hands-on training in playing musical instruments.
- Singing & Voice Training – Developing vocal techniques and performance skills.
This year, GMYI partnered with GAMAE International to enhance the performing arts aspect of the music workshop. A total of three local schools joined together with Sacred Heart Roman Catholic School in participating in this year's GYMI workshop resulting in what will be a more inclusive, captivating and memorable recital for all.
GYMI, is fostering a new generation of musicians who will preserve and celebrate Garifuna music and culture while embracing a future of artistic excellence.
