The song Nisamina is part of a Garifuna in High Places Project (GIHP) whose goal is to preserve the endangered Garifuna language. Garifuna language has been on the brink of extinction ever since the genocide of the Garinagu in 1797. However, preservation efforts has allowed for this once forbidden language to be recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of Humanity on 18 May 2001.

Nisamina in Garifuna language translates to mean- In my mind- Nisamina beautifully captures the intensity of a kind of love that completely takes over the mind and soul. The lyrics express a deep longing and admiration for someone who occupies every thought, from morning to night. It’s about that overwhelming feeling where every moment, whether awake or asleep, is somewhat captivated with thoughts of this person. The music have a dreamy, soulful quality to match the theme, making listeners feel the same deep, consuming love.

Gufurandabana (Please Understand Me) is a powerful track blending the beauty of Garifuna culture with universal themes of love and identity. Here, it is sung in the Garifuna translation offering an inspiring and captivating experience for all listeners while aiming to preserve and promote the endangered Garifuna culture.

The original song was performed by Vincentian artiste Judy Boucher and titled: Can't Be With You Tonight. It was translated into the Garifuna language by James Lovell Garifuna artiste. This love ballad is about being torn between two loves and wishing one could be in two places at the same time to share that love. Garinagu (plural form of Garifuna) today still remember those ancestors who perished and those that survived the sad genocidal experience where they were forced out of their homeland Yurumein/St.Vincent & the Grenadines by colonial powers to a barren island called Balliceaux and were further banished to countries such as Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua and Guatemala. Garinagu today are still craving and longing for their homeland Yurumein/St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

Gufurandabana (Please Understand Me) can be contrasted to the love Garinagu have for homeland Yurumein/ St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and the countries they now call home.

“Balliceaux / Baliso” is a song of remembrance, healing, and ancestral connection. Inspired by the sacred island of Balliceaux in St. Vincent and the Grenadines/ Yurumein, where the Garifuna ancestors were exiled in an attempted genocide, the song honors their suffering, resilience, and survival.

Through reflective lyrics and heartfelt emotion, Ganigi expresses a deep longing for a homeland many have never seen yet carry in their spirit. It is both a tribute and a call to remember, to honor, and to one day return, standing in unity on sacred ground.

The lyrics in the song are giving praise and worship to an Almighty Supreme and acknowledging the presence of this supernatural being amongst us and within us.
The song was translated from the original English translation into Garifuna. Garifuna is the language spoken by the black Africans known today as Garifuna (mixed of Carib Indians and West Africans) who faced genocide from their homeland St. Vincent and the grenadines in 1797.
The Garifuna survivors, retained some of the language and culture and past down enough that kept the language and culture barely alive among themselves. However, the importance of the language was recognized recently in 2001 by UNESCO. Garifuna are today found living in Central American countries of Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Guatemala and in the indigenous communities through out the Antilles homeland country of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Garifuna can also be found in parts of the United States and Canada.

Ganigi is a passionate singer committed to preserving and promoting the endangered Garifuna culture through music. She grew up immersed in church music, where singing became second nature. Her journey from choir performances, to using music as a median to learn her ancestral  Garifuna Language  at the Garifuna University Without walls led to then  sharing stages  with JLAMA (James Lovell and the Afri- Garifuna Ambassadors  doing peformances with the New York Philharmonic and solo performances at prestigious venues like the Amazura Concert Hall and Bronx Music Hall reflects her dedication to her craft. Blending traditional Garifuna rhythms with modern inspirational music, Ganigi creates a unique sound that transcends language barriers, performing in both Garifuna and English. Her mission is to use music as a bridge between cultures, educating, uplifting, and inspiring audiences worldwide. Through her soulful voice and heartfelt performances, she invites listeners to join her in keeping the Garifuna heritage alive.
